King George, VA

Geographic Location

King George County, otherwise known as the Gateway to the Northern Neck, is located in the Eastern part of the Commonwealth of Virginia. The county borders the Potomac & Rappahannock Rivers, on adverse sides, at the same time connecting Westmoreland with Stafford Counties. Step foot in the waters of the Potomac River that line the county  and you are now in Southern Maryland.

Overall personality

Known for it’s rural appeal, King George County has the small town feel, but is situated close enough to Stafford County’s expansive shopping, tourism as well as secondary education are all close at the University of Mary Washington King George campus.

Defining Characteristics

King George County was established in 1720 when land was split from Richmond County, Virginia. The county is named for King George I of Great Britain. With a total of 188 sq. miles and 8sq miles of water or river there is plenty to do in the area.
Naval Base at Dahlgren is situated on the northeastern end of the county. Dahlgren was established in 1918 as part of an extension of its sister base known as Indian Head, situated across the Potomac River in Southern Maryland.
In March of 1751, James Madison, the fourth President of the United States, was born in Port Conway in southern King George County at Belle Grove Planation, which can still be visited. May 1, 1861, during the American Civil War, Confederates installed artillery at Mathias Point, at the northern end of King George on the Potomac, in order to blockade the Potomac River. June of that year the steamer Thomas Freeborn bombarded Mathias Point in an attempt to drive away the soldiers manning the weapons. Confederate soldiers manned a counter offense from Mathias point, striking and fatally wounding Commander James H. Ward of the Freeborn, who became the first Union naval officer to die in the Civil War.
John Wilkes Booth and David Herold crossed into King George while trying to elude Union Cavalry for the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. Booth and Herlod landed at Gambo Creek Before meeting with Confederate agents, who would guide their passage to Port Conway, where they would cross into Port Royal in Caroline County Virginia.

Noteworthy attractions

Couples and Young Adults 21 and over- Oak Crest offers wine tastings and does collective events with Caledon for couple’s events. Old Town Fredericksburg is only 20 minutes away with plenty of romantic and cute little restaurants. Fairview Beach off of 218 has to restaurants with boating and fishing spots available.
Kids/Kid-Friendly or Kid-specific attractions- King George Fall Festival happens every October, King George County also sponsors many activities and sports all year long; Egg hunt, Kite Fly, Tea Parties, Lego Club. Kings Dominion theme park is 45 minutes down 301/95 as well as Washington D.C being only an hour and half north of us.
Pet owners- Dahlgren Railroad Heritage Trail and Caledon State Park are both pet friendly.
Outdoor Adventures- There are many hiking trails all over the county, also with in short driving distance to historic parks and parks in surrounding counties.
King George County is Birth Place to our 4th president and surrounding counties to the east west are birth place and childhood homes to many other significant American Presidents and Generals.
Kings Dominion Theme Park is located off I-95, Exit 98 on Route 30 East about 45 minutes from King George, but actually sits in Hanover County, VA. Kings Dominion hosts an assortment of amusement park rides, games and a water park for adults and kids of all ages.
Museums in the county include: King George Historical Society, Caledon Nature Preserve.

The majority of the county is zoned rural preservation, which helps to keep the rural beauty of the county.
